Every Exquisite Thing Matthew Quick Books

Eighteen-year-old Nanette has spent all her life living up to the expectations of others, too afraid to do what she really wants with her life. She is given a book with a protagonist that "quits", rebels, and does things his own way, which changes her outlook on life. Nanette becomes friends with the author, gets her first boyfriend (an aspiring poet who is also a fan of the book), and begins to make her own decisions--becoming a rebel herself. She finds that rebelling can have drastic repercussions on herself and others.

Every Exquisite Thing, like Quick's other novels, deals with the serious subject of mental health issues. Again, as with his other novels, he treats this subject with delicacy and understanding, and without condescension. For those not familiar with mental health issues, this book will reveal a world that needs to be comprehended; for those that are familiar with these issues, it will be a comfort to see that they are not alone.

Told by Nanette in first person, this moving novel is immediately engrossing and stays so until the end. The situations are real, the characters well developed, and the prose excellent. It is marketed as a Young Adult book, but I found it equally suitable for an adult.

While it wasn't as stunning as the Silver Linings Playbook or the Good Luck of Right Now, Every Exquisite Thing is a fantastic read and I highly recommend it.

Every Exquisite Thing Matthew Quick Books Reviews

This is an ok book. Very well written. Certainly not a life changing story, but with a few interesting features. I couldn't relate with the characters as they evolved (?) and felt there was no real closure to their storis, but then again, probably that was the intention of the authot all along.
I absolutely LOVE this book! Originally I checked it out from my local library and knew right away it was something I needed to own. I just finished it minutes ago and already can't wait to start it over. So many parts I can't wait to underline and highlight. It's a book I can relate to so well having mental health issues myself and also Seeing others close to me struggle with their own.
Beautiful writing! Thank you Mr. Quick, you've written an amazing book I look forward to reading over and over again!
I'm a little tired today because I couldn't put down Every Exquisite Thing last night. I loved the book and the characters with all their imperfections. I loved following along with Nannette's journey.
Matthew Quicks stories rarely have fairy tale endings. They are much more realistic. Yet somehow I always find myself cheering for the characters. Somehow I always find myself with a little more hope.
I've been in the business (English teacher and librarian) for 42 years now and I can honestly say that matthew quick is simply the best author writing for a young adult and adults young in their hearts crowd! Every book of his that I read makes me a better person....sort of like Nanette feels about the bubblegum reaper.
I read this book in five days, that's how outstanding it was. I don't care if it was a YA novel, as I would read anything by Matthew Quick because he's that good. This one had great characters, a great storyline, and it really makes you think about conformity vs rebellion, and how there's a fine line in between laced with obsession and apathy. I recommend this book. It is an interesting read.
I love the way Matthew Quick writes. He is a great storyteller and I love his quirky characters! I absolutely loved this book- one of my 2016 favorites. I could relate to Nanette and it made me think back to my high school years (many, many years ago). It's ok if you're an introvert and prefer staying at home alone to read or listen to music. I don't know how Nanette was able to keep up her experiment for so long- it had to be exhausting. Pretending to not be an introvert is hard and exhausting.
I am so mad at myself for waiting so long to read something by Matthew Quick! I need to immediately read Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock and The Good Luck of Right Now, both of which have been sitting on my kindle for awhile because I loved this book, his latest, so much! I seriously think there are probably no two books that speak more to me and how I felt when when I was a teenager than Things I Can't Forget by Miranda Kenneally and Every Exquisite Thing. The first third, in particular, of this book felt almost as if I could have written it -- not that I have the talent but that someone spilled out my high school brain and caressed and molded it into something so beautiful so as to be Nanette's voice in this book. Where do I even begin to tell you about this book? It is, as the description states, about Nanette O'Hare, a high school senior who reads a book that changes her life but it is also about so much more. I know this book won't be for everyone, but it was definitely for me.

The Bubblegum Reaper -- the book that Nanette reads at the beginning of this book -- has a very pronounced similarity to the The Catcher in the Rye -- it is ostensibly about a misunderstood teenager who wants to quit it all, it has an ending that leaves more questions than answers and, most similarly, it is written by a recluse who basically faded from public life after this book was published despite the fact that it has since attained cult-like status and driven thousands of people to try and seek out the author for answers. Nanette, too, wants to seek out these answers and when she finds out that the reclusive author lives not more than 20 minutes away from her, she strikes up a friendship with him that changes everything. I won't tell you anything else about the plot because this is one you should read but the star of this book is the writing -- it is lyrical and poetic but not heavy handed. It doesn't take itself too seriously or try too hard. I couldn't put this down and I never felt that moment, like I have felt recently no matter what I'm reading, that the book was dragging along. It is short but mighty and now, for me, filled with so many highlights of passages that I will read and re-read every year. My review isn't doing this book justice, at all, but you know by now that I loved it. I rarely give books five star reviews because I rarely read five star books. This is one of them.

I highly recommend this to pretty much everyone that's ever been a teenager and/or fallen in love with The Catcher in the Rye—sometimes I think those two things are synonymous. This actually reminded me of several other favorites and it will star in a This & That soon but, for now, I can say that this was such an amazing read for me.
