This is a catalog of an exhibit at the Guggenheim in 1982. Catalogs are a crapshoot. Sometimes you don't get what you want. I was hoping for a nice collection of Kandinsky's artwork up to the beginning of his abstracts, in color. This is a very thick catalog but is mostly about the artistic world in the German speaking countries, especially around Munich, in which Kandinsky became active (influences, milieu, etc.) Not much Kandinsky and not much in color by anyone. If you are interested in detailed history and love black and white illustrations of period arts and crafts this is for you. If not...keep looking.

Art as an attempt to preserve the tickle of a turning point which made it absurd for painters to get pleasure from painting a tubful of dead Marat makes this exhibit of what was exciting over a hundred years ago a joy for 1982 and some scholars of art today. Figure 265 White Sound by Kandinsky, 1908, is a painting of oil on cardboard different in style from Figure 266, White Sound, 1911, a small color woodcut on paper shown in black and white in this book. I enjoy color reproductions more than the others, but I learned so much about Kandinsky and why he was an artist before this book attracted me that I can only feel sorry for the twentieth century victims of people thinking about money, megadeath, and cults.

Gob save us from people thinking about polygamy and imitators of that ilk.
This 1982 Exhibit at the Guggenheim and this book, which I had back in the 80s, started in earnest my lifelong love affair with Kandinsky's Paintings. I'm painting now and I've enjoyed tremendously doing versions of his works. I learn so much and the experience of being in the presence of his Paintings and Drawings is amazing. A+ There are two more in this series covering K's entire Career, Russia and Germany1915-33 and Paris 1933-44.
