Mr. Hessel as an incredible biography, and I was hoping for either a memoir of his experiences during World War II or an essay of his reflections on and lessons learned from having survived that war. However, as eloquent as he is, Mr. Hessel has written the standard rant against so-called modern society because it has failed to live up to his standards and ideals. He does write some interesting things, but the book, overall, becomes one long, "Get off my lawn, you darn kids!"

Excellent book to understand the "occupy" movements around the world.
A book that we should read in times like the present one, when violence is present in the world. Who better to teach us a lesson than Mr Hessel, an Holocaust victim, and an activist for peace.
This is more of a paper than a book. It is very short and one can easily read it in an hour. However, I urge you to take your time and read it slowly, highlighting along the way and to take the time to read the references. The message is simple - become indignant over the threat to human universal rights, then take action. Hessel takes the time to put the words in context and to tell you what he means in reference to the 20th century resistance that he was a part of in the 1940s to defeat fascism in France. Hessel was also one of the many architects of the philosophies networks that were the basis of the creation of the United Nations.
I recommend this book as it encourages self reflection and gives hope for a better place.
This is a quick and profound read that is so prescient in these troubled times, written by a man who lived through the terror and hardships of WWII.
This little book deserves to be read by everyone! It has sold millions of copies in Europe and has been translated into multiple languages. Hope someone will make a movie of the life of this incredible human being who became a global celebrity at the age of 95.
We've been aware of this booklet ever since it was published. Alas, back then we had to order it from the UK. We keep buying more copies.
I love this book Time to listen to our elders IMO. The author fought with the French Resistance during WW II, and was indeed fortunate to escape from the Nazis who were about to hang him for his Resistance efforts and because he is a Jew. The Nazis had tortured him by various means including water boarding.
Chapter titles Time for Outrage. Indignation Fuels Resistance. Two Visions of History. The Worst Attitude is Indifference. Palestine - My Own Outrage. Non Violence -- The Path We must Learn to Follow. For a Peaceful Insurrection. Publisher's Notes. About the Author.
The author "speaks" in a clear and persuasive voice, and supports his gentle arguments with examples of his own experiences in life. I highly recommend this book.
My hardcover copy is a First North American Edition and is translated into English by Marion Duvert. The binding is excellent Med. red, smooth book cover almost feels like leather with its high gloss-lightly textured finish and is small enough to fit into a breast pocket.
Short, concise, and, like the headline EVERYONE needs to read this pamplet. Do yourself and your country a favor.
